Built on over 170 years of continuous hospitality, the venue's ground floor showcases an evolving timeline of Australian interior design. Look up to admire soaring ceilings, decorative plasterwork, ceiling roses, and early 1900s cornices. Stewarded by long-standing publicans across generations—including Sarah Cox (1860), Mary J. Fern (1893), C. E. House (1899), Delaney (up until 1998), and Gary and Jan Browning (from 1998)—the hotel continually modernized, including sleek 1938 Art Deco bar renovations under Mrs. M. M. Cameron and Olive May Hancock (1940). Expanding the property's footprint, current owners acquired the adjacent site to build a vibrant, Melbourne-style laneway connection straight through to Armstrong Street North, anchoring The Lane Cafe. Today, guests can enjoy traditional Devonshire Tea in the Heritage Bar Bistro, fresh coffee and light bites at The Lane Cafe, or regional vintages from Local, Pyrenees, and Grampians wineries at The Wine Bar.
